Shared ownership is designed to help people who want to buy a home but cannot afford to buy outright. It allows you to buy a share of a property (normally between 25 percent and 75 percent), whilst paying rent on the remaining share that we own. To be eligible, you should be able to obtain a shared ownership mortgage and not be listed on the Deeds to another property. Once you are a shared ownership homeowner, you can purchase more shares (known as staircasing).
